When was your last eye check-up? If you’re squinting at the screen trying to remember… it might be time to book one!

Just like your annual medical or dental visits, eye exams are an essential part of staying healthy. Even if your vision seems “fine,” your eyes could be silently signalling early signs of issues such as myopia, glaucoma, cataracts, or even diabetic changes.

So, how often should you actually get your eyes checked?

👶 For Children: Every 6 to 12 Months

Vision plays a huge role in your child’s development — from reading in class to playing outdoors.

In Singapore, where 1 in 2 children develop myopia by Primary 6, early detection is key. We recommend:

  • First eye exam: by age 3

  • School-going children: every 6 to 12 months

  • Especially if there’s a family history of myopia or if they’re spending more time on screens than playgrounds!

At House of Spectacles, we also offer myopia management options — from special myopia control spectacles to night-time ortho-k lenses.

👦👩 For Adults (18–60 years): Every 1–2 Years

Even if your prescription hasn’t changed, regular eye exams are important for:

  • Updating your glasses or contact lenses

  • Detecting silent issues like glaucoma

  • Managing digital eye strain or dry eyes from prolonged screen time

If you wear glasses, contact lenses, or have chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes), aim for annual check-ups.

👵 For Seniors (Above 60): Every Year

As we age, the risk of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma increases. Even if you’ve worn glasses for years, your eye health can change rapidly past 60. Regular checks help preserve your vision and maintain your independence.

👁️ Special Situations: Check More Frequently If You…

  • Have diabetes or hypertension

  • Experience sudden vision changes (blur, floaters, flashes)

  • Get frequent headaches or eye strain

  • Have a family history of eye conditions
